Crayola Calligraphy

The Markers

About The Markers

I have recently started being really into lettering. But, mostly calligraphy. To actually buy nice calligraphy pens can be really expensive. So... I did some research and decided to try with Crayola markers. So I got a bunch of different kinds. I got the 8 count metallic markers, the 50 count super tips markers, and the 5 count paint brush pens which all come with the crayoligraphy calligraphy kit. There are many other types of Crayola markers that you can get as well. Crayola markers are a good place to start because they are very inexpensive. You can also get them in big packs so you have tons of color options. Then later on if you want you can upgrade to a better type of marker once you are ready.

The Difference

The biggest difference between Crayola markers and calligraphy markers are the tips. As a result, you may need to apply more pressure to the tip of the marker than you are used to or that you feel comfortable with. Because of that, your marker might die a little quicker than you are used to, but they are incredibly inexpensive so you can buy new ones or just use a different color.

Calligraphy and Faux Calligraphy

Calligraphy

Calligraphy is fancy handwriting where the down strokes are thick and the upstrokes are thin. There are many different types of calligraphy including modern calligraphy. Calligraphy can be cursive or just normal handwriting with the thicks and thins.

Faux Calligraphy

Faux calligraphy, like calligraphy, has thin upstrokes and thick down strokes. But, with calligraphy, you write with the thin and thick strokes. In faux calligraphy, you just write normally and you color in the thick strokes.

How to Use The Markers

How to Hold The Markers

You should hold the marker at a 45-degree angle. That way you can easily get the thick and thin lines without really moving your hand or the marker. It might take some practice to get the right angle but it will become easier.

Applying Pressure

To get the best work you need to apply more pressure than you are used to. It makes the lines better. Just be careful not to push too hard on the tips or else it will ruin them. If you see the markers bending a little to one side then turn the tip around to kind of bend it back. And like I said before, these markers are super inexpensive so if you go through them a little quicker, then, oh well.

Practicing

It is going to take lots of practice to be able to get your writing to look just right. I am still working on that. If you want, you can google and find free printable worksheets to practice with. Or if you buy the crayoligraphy calligraphy kit it comes with a booklet to trace and some room to try it on your own.

Types of Markers

Crayola Super Tips Markers

Crayola super tip markers are, well... super tipped. They can be used for calligraphy but work best for faux calligraphy. They are best for the smaller thing so you don't waste to much ink.

Crayola Metallic Markers

The metallic markers don't really work for calligraphy because of their tips. But, they do work for faux calligraphy.

Paint Brush Pens

I personally love these makers. They work really good for calligraphy but don't work for faux calligraphy. These take more practice than other markers. They also get on your skin more easily but it comes off.

Style

You can add many things to your writing to make it unique. You can add little lines or dots to all the edges. Or you cannot color in the thick strokes, just outline them. You can also add embellishments. Embellishments are just little things you add, like little lines to make something pop.
